Kisan Rally will continue as farmers reject government’s assaurance

Thousands of farmers tried to enter the national capital of Delhi. This was orchestrated as a part of a massive protest march. On Tuesday, the government announced that a committee of Chief Ministers will look into their demands. The protestors in the Kisan Rally did not move a muscle. They stayed put and said that they were not satisfied with the assurance.

The Union Minister of State for Agriculture, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat met the protesting farmers at the Delhi-UP border. The government was continuously assuring the farmers that their cause will be taken forward for further consideration.

He said, “I assure all this. We will move court over the NGT order (to ban tractor and vehicles that are more than 10 years old). Another serious problem is being faced the farmers. That is the problem of farm labour. The minister said that the government would look at bringing some changes to the minimum wage rules. The minimum wage rule change for rural areas will surely resolve this problem.

Shekhawat added, “The government has formed a committee of six chief ministers to look into this issue of labour for farm. The committee is in talks to connect MNREGA with agriculture. On behalf of (Union Home Minister) Rajnath Singh, I assure you that I will represent the farmers’ interest in this committee and whatever changes would be required to link MNREGA with agriculture will be made.”

Even after gaining this assurance, the protesting farmers did not waver from the Delhi border. They have stopped the police from entering Delhi through their Kisan rally.

This Kisan Rally the agitating farmers and their subsequent response to the assurance the government is proof of the distrust floating among the community of farmers. It is proof that the present government has not been able to gain their trust.
